What is The Pyramid Model?

The Pyramid Model provides an evidence-based framework proven to be an effective approach to building social emotional competency at home and in early care and education settings. Experts in child care, education, healthcare, family support and mental health have collectively identified the critical need to support and teach families, caregivers and educators how to help children develop these competencies.

With the assistance of National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations, NYS Pyramid Model focuses on: improving the social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes of young children birth to five; eliminating the use of inappropriate and disproportionate exclusionary discipline practices; promoting family engagement; using data for decision-making; increasing the use of trauma-informed and culturally and linguistically responsive practices; and fostering inclusion.

What does pyramid model do?

The Pyramid Model is focused on building positive relationships, developing supportive and nurturing environments, teaching social skills, empathy, and emotional vocabulary, and providing individualized supports when needed.

Pyramid Model practices:

  • preventing suspensions in child care, prekindergarten, and kindergarten
  • promoting brain growth
  • encouraging social and emotional growth and development for infants, toddlers and preschoolers

Pyramid Model implementation:

  • improves the quality in early care and learning settings across New York State
  • helps early childhood teachers learn new skills
